Martha Washington, was the Former first lady of the united states of America, and spent about half of the Revolutionary War at the front with General George Washington. she helped manage and run her husbands’ estates and raised her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She set many standards and customs for the proper behavior and treatment of the president’s wife.

Martha Washington Early Life

Martha Dandridge Custis Washington was born on June 2, 1731, at Chestnut Grove plantation new Kent country. Martha was the first of eight children born to John Dandridge and Frances Jones.

Daughter of formers John and Frances Jones Dandridge.  Martha, received an education traditional for younger women of her class and time, one in which domestic skills and arts far outweighed since, mathematics.

Martha Washington was also known as a regular and active letter writer, and a collection of her surviving letters are housed in the collection of the Mount Vernon library. Martha is described as a lovely and attractive woman with a lively personality. These characteristics allowed her to overcome and forge her own path in the world.

Martha Washington First Marriage

Martha Dandridge first married Daniel Parke Custis on May 15, 1750. Daniel Parke Custis was an American Planter and Politician. On July 8, 1757, Daniel Parke Custis died because of “Camp fever” (either epidemic typhus or dysentery) in New Kent County, Virginia, United States.

George Washington and Martha Dandridge Custis Washington were married on 6 January 1759. he was young Colonel George Washington and Martha Washington was a young widow.

Martha Washington and George had all the neighbors come around and the house was filled with music and laughter had been a sad time as a widow so that marked the beginning of happiness again.

All of the people were dancing. They had lavender dancing shoes and the general was the best dancer in Virginia we say if you’re a good horseman you’ll be a good dancer I saved my wedding gown from that special day it was made in London as most of our clothes were in those old days a gold gown and fine brocade the white petticoat and he had put aside then his military uniform from the war with the French.

His Virginiablues in favor of a suit of blue velvet with glass buttons it went very well with his red hair and his blue eyes forty years have now passed since that day so long ago though their memories are still clear yet think that they never would have imagined on that day what they live would bring us through it all they have been as they often call they worthy partners.
